Homeschool Article on Fox News

I just wanted to share this article from Fox News. It is a good article to read.

Read it by clicking here.

The only part I didn't like about the article was the statement, "Chard said he worries home schooled students may be lacking in less tangible subjects, things like developing social or coping skills."

I hear the "What about socialization?" question more than any other as a home schooling parent.

First, let me just say that my children are active in our church where there are other children. I also try to take them on field trips and spend time with other homeschooling parents and their children.
Secondly, if you look up the definition of "socialize", I don't want my children meeting some of those definitions.

1. "To place under group ownership or control". I don't want that for my children!

2. "To make fit for companionship with others". My children can learn this without going to public school. I don't know where the idea came from that my child HAS to go to public school to learn how to be friendly and get along with others, but that is very false! They, once again, go to other places with other people.

3. "make conform to socialist ideas and philosophies." I think this definition explains itself. I DON'T want this for my child at all! Enough said!

  1. Yes, and I think kids in public schools are over socialized! They care more about their "social life" then their education. Kids in the 1800's mostly only socialized with their families! Spending time with a friend was a rare thing and those children turned out to be responsible adults, parents, and citizens. They were a LOT more responsible and well mannered than any of today's kids. The whole socialization thing drives me CRAZY!

Anyway, I see you are using the Rod & Staff preschool books with your son! :-) I used those for my daughter when I taught her kindergarten. They are great.
