Sewing a Men's Shirt

I received my first order from Colette Patterns today. I chose to purchase the Negroni, Jasmine, and Peony.

I was so excited, I decided I would start with the Negroni. It is an intermediate level pattern, so I didn't know if I was up to the task. I thought that it might be above my skill level. Needless to say, I proved myself wrong. I was more than ready to take on an intermediate level pattern. Here are the pictures of my progress:

The Colette Patterns Negroni

I read a lovely little Colette Patterns tip about tracing your pattern onto wax paper. This worked beautifully! I could trace his size without cutting the original pattern.

I could then iron the wax paper to the fabric with a warm iron. It held steady as I cut the fabric, allowing me to cut the fabric neatly.

The body of the shirt.
It looks like a different color, but I promise it's the same shirt. I had it hanging in front of some open windows. Perhaps that made the color look different.

The sleeves.
Now, I have some funny stories about these sleeves. I installed the sleeve plackets and sewed the sleeves in place, only to discover, one was on backwards. The placket was on the front of the sleeve instead of the back!! ARGH! I had to seam rip it out and start all over. I was able to fix it easily, thank goodness! I didn't even have to make a whole new sleeve!

The cuff with sleeve placket.
Oh, the cuffs!! After sewing them on backwards and having to seam rip them out TWICE, I finally got it right. The pattern instructions were great, but I just misunderstood how to put this part on. I then realized that I was pinning the cuff on upside down. I would have realized this had I looked at the picture and saw that it was not showing the interfacing side out! HA! Too funny!

The back of the finished shirt!
Don't it look lovely?

My wonderful husband, Coot, modeling the beautiful new shirt!

Can you tell I am proud? He liked it so much, he even wore it to work today!

Side Note: I am not sure what happened to my blog. I logged in and my image at the top was gone. Even the images on my "about the flock" section are showing errors. I didn't know how to fix it. I tried, I really did, but couldn't figure it out. So pardon the appearance. I hope to get it fixed soon.

  1. You really need to start sewing for others - like me :) You are awesome! That shirt looks like it was purchased. As for the images.... ummmm.. I might know what happened to them...
